Communication is a fundamental human right. SpeakFree is built from the ground up to be usable by every person, regardless of ability.

WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance

SpeakFree conforms to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level. We conduct regular automated and manual audits using assistive technologies including NVDA, VoiceOver, JAWS, and TalkBack. Our team includes individuals who use AAC daily, and their lived experience directly informs every design decision.

Our Commitments

Large Touch Targets

All interactive elements meet a minimum 44x44px touch target size, exceeding WCAG 2.5.8 guidelines. Communication boards use oversized buttons designed for users with limited fine motor control.

High Contrast Support

Every color combination in SpeakFree meets WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for text, 3:1 for UI components). A dedicated high-contrast mode pushes ratios to AAA (7:1) for users with low vision.

Reduced Motion

We honor the prefers-reduced-motion media query throughout the application. Animations and transitions are disabled when this setting is active, preventing discomfort for users with vestibular sensitivities.

Screen Reader Optimized

All UI elements include proper ARIA labels, roles, and live regions. Communication board outputs are announced via aria-live so screen reader users hear the composed message in real time.

Keyboard Navigable

Every feature in SpeakFree is fully operable via keyboard. Logical focus order, visible focus indicators, and skip-navigation links ensure efficient keyboard-only use across all pages.

Responsive & Adaptive

The interface scales seamlessly from large desktop monitors to tablets and smartphones. Users can operate SpeakFree on any device they prefer, including switch-access and eye-tracking hardware.
